My journey into the world of fieldsports started with a very naughty dog and, let’s be honest, my own lack of experience as a handler. Every great dog trainer seems to have a story like this, and I truly believe that my journey wouldn’t have unfolded the way it did without her.
In the early days, it was a whirlwind of trial and error. I stumbled my way through various training methods, often feeling overwhelmed and unsure. But fortune smiled upon me when I finally came across the right trainer. This pivotal moment changed everything. I dedicated years to volunteering, throwing dummies, soaking in knowledge, and observing some of the best dogs I had ever encountered. One thing I learned is that if you think you’ve thrown enough dummies, you probably haven’t! The journey of a dog trainer is one of continuous learning, and I embraced
that wholeheartedly.
As I honed my skills, I eagerly attended shoot days, often beating, picking up for free as I still do now. This invaluable experience allowed me to connect training with real-life scenarios, giving me the opportunity to work alongside my dogs in an authentic setting. The hands-on experience was crucial in shaping me as a trainer and deepening my understanding of the field.
Fast forward a few years, and here I am, living my dream as a dog trainer in the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland. I am incredibly fortunate to be part of a fantastic and supportive team that serves as my biggest cheerleaders. Together, we are dedicated to preserving our Gundog breeds, ensuring they thrive in the roles for which they were originally bred.
My passion lies in working with these incredible dogs. They are the heartbeat of my journey in field sports. I live and breathe them every day, and I’m deeply grateful to have found a career that feels like more than just a job. My days are varied and fulfilling, from working the dogs on a shoot to doing lessons, sending dogs around the globe, and even playing the role of a midwife to our new generation of pups.
I am excited for what lies ahead and look forward to continuing this adventure alongside my four-legged companions. Here’s to the thrill of fieldsports and the joy of working with our beloved dogs!
